Captains Blog May 2017

Hi,

May is a busy month for our competing members, particularly our masters group. This weekend we have a number of our members competing in the NSW Masters Championships, quickly followed by the Australian Masters Championships At Nagambie Lake in Victoria. The months of training come down to the next few weeks and I wish you all the best with your racing.

Last weekend we had a working bee focusing on the grounds outside of the shed and the gym area. Thank you to all who helped on the day, it looks great and a great outcome for the effort put in on the day. Thankyou to Geoff Green for pulling it together.

A reminder to all that as the sunrise gets later we need to be diligent in having the correct lighting on our boats. We also need to be aware of where we are on the bay. With a lot of corporate crews out there at the moment, who may not necessarily know the rules of the bay, you need to keep a more regular look out to avoid collisions.

It's been a long time coming, but it was great to see a women's 8+ take the water last weekend in our recently acquired Sykes 8+. The crew and boat had a great 1st outing and made the first steps towards competing in this year's Head Of The Yarra.

Can you all please make sure that if you are heading out for a row and need to pull out the tinnies to access your boat, your unfortunately a tree fell on it in recent storms but we should have back in action shortly.
On a brighter note (pls excuse the pun),, the sensor light on the stairs has been reinstalled.
In June the JB Sharp series begins. These regattas are very informal but are a great way of getting into competition rowing. The races are shorter than normal and the entry system is basically show up at the start. I would encourage everyone who want to give racing a crack, to get out there.
In the next month or so we will hold another working bee, focusing on boat maintenance. I would like to incorporate an introduction to rigging in this working bee with a view to running participants through the basics of boat rigging, gearing etc. If you have a particular area you want to focus on, please let me know.
In September, DRC will once again host the NSW Erg Championships. With the success of last year's Australian Erg Champs, we expect a big event and encourage all our members to have a go.
I look forward to seeing you all on the pontoon and water.
Thanks

Club Captain crew puts them back again after you have put your boat away. If you think, but are not sure, that another boat is out from the bay, put the tinnies away anyway. Please ensure that the gym lights are turned off and both doors closed before you leave.

We have a few boats being repaired over the next few weeks. The Hocking is currently on slings at the side of the shed. unfortunately a tree fell on it in recent storms but we should have back in action shortly.
